The ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has amended its earlier decision to ban all its officials from attending rallies organised in support of aspirants seeking elective offices.
The party in a statement by its spokesperson, Olisa Metuh, said on Thursday that PDP officials can now attend rallies organised in honour of President Goodluck Jonathan.
The party had adopted Mr. Jonathan as its sole presidential candidate.
A Pro-Jonathan group, the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria, TAN, has been staging rallies across Nigeria and is billed to stage the grand finale on Saturday at the Eagle Square, Abuja.
Analysts say Mr. Jonathan, who has yet to accept the nomination of his party, may finally declare his bid at the Saturday event.
PDP said it is allowing officials to attend events supporting Mr. Jonathan because the president has already been adopted as the sole candidate of the party for the 2015 presidential election.
“Further to the endorsement of His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, by the National Executive Committee, NEC, as PDP’s sole Presidential candidate, the National Working Committee has cleared all elected party officials at all levels to attend and fully participate in any event organized in support of his candidacy,” Mr. Metuh said.
He also said that henceforth, all elected party officials and party members are at liberty to fully get involved in events and activities organized by groups or individuals supporting Mr. Jonathan for the 2015 general elections.
