Former Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission Xu Caihou
A former senior Chinese military official has confessed to receiving massive bribes, a report says.
Former Vice Chairman of China’s Central Military Commission Xu Caihou has admitted to accepting “huge amounts of bribes” personally and through family members, the official Chinese Xinhua news agency reported on Tuesday.
The former top military official is accused of taking advantage of his position and accepting money and property in exchange for promotions and other favors, the report noted.
Military prosecutors had previously started a procedure to file the case with judicial authorities, Xinhua said. Xu was court-martialed in June, stripped of his title and expelled from the military before making the confession.
His exclusion from the Communist Party has recently been formalized, the news agency said.
The Chinese government has embarked on a wide-scale campaign against deep-rooted graft since two years ago.
China’s top anti-graft official, Wang Qishan, recently reaffirmed that the fight against deeply-ingrained corruption will never end.
Beijing has investigated more than 25,000 people for corruption in the first half of 2014.
Several high-profile lawmakers have been expelled from the ruling Communist Party and charged with corruption.
President Xi Jinping has said widespread graft threatens the Communist Party’s survival.
